The Grass Is Always Greener Where You Water It

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” Psalms 103:2
In this passage of Scripture, we are exhorted to count our blessings — to be thankful to God for that which we have received from His hand, and to be content in those blessings.
The God of Jacob is our help and strength. He is our Good Shepherd, who leads us beside still waters and into pastures green. He satisfies our soul with good things and loves us with an everlasting love.
So why, then, are so many of God’s people discontented? Hath not God given unto us all that we have? Is not our every situation ordained of God? Has He not a purpose in everything that happens in our lives?
Since God is all knowing, and since He loves us with an everlasting love, should we not, in faith, accept with humble thanks all that He sends our way?
You have probably heard the expression; The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. This indicates discontentment with one’s own life circumstances. When this happens, you tend to compare your life with the lives of others, and you can get the idea that everybody else has it better than you do . . . but this is foolish. Don’t compare your life, your family, your career, your possessions, with that of anyone else! Each of us has both good and bad circumstances which we must deal with in our lives, but we must remember that things are the way they are in our life because God, in His infinite wisdom, chose it to be so . . . for our good! “For we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
He is the potter and we are the clay in His hands. We are His workmanship. It is through those things which God has brought into our lives that He is forming us and shaping us into the image of our Lord Jesus Christ!
STOP looking for greener grass on the other side of the fence! For if you do indeed find greener grass over there, it wouldn’t be your grass, it would belong to someone else, and we are commanded not to covet that which is our neighbour’s.
Each of us has what we have by the Will and design of God, and He knows best! TRUST God’s Sovereignty. TRUST His plan for your life. BE CONTENT with that which you have, and with where you are. It is, after all, yours. It is what God, in His divine omniscience, has ordained that you should have. And if the grass on your side of the fence doesn’t seem quite green enough for you . . . WATER IT!
Put forth your best effort, and make the most of what you have been given. Another well known expression is, “If life gives you a lemon, make lemonade!” This is good advice for every area of life. Instead of being discontented with your life circumstances, be thankful for what you have. Learn to love it and cultivate it. Tend to it with love and care. When you water the grass that God has given you, you will see that it will become GREEN!
So, if your job is not satisfying . . . WATER IT! If your marriage is not satisfying . . . WATER IT! If that relationship is not satisfying . . . WATER IT! If you’re not pleased with your church . . . WATER IT!
Do all that you do with all your might, like you’re doing it for God!
COUNT your blessings! Find JOY in your life situations, and be CONTENT with that which God has given you! And if the grass doesn’t seem quite green enough . . . WATER IT!
Because the grass is always greener . . . where you water it.
