The Calm Before the Storm
THE Psalmist wrote of stormy winds and waves that mounted high so that sailors reeled to and fro, and staggered like drunken men. In their trouble they cried unto the Lord to deliver them out of their distresses. Then follows the Psalmist’s declaration: “He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.” (Ps. 107: 29.)
Later Jesus Christ demonstrated His power over wind and sea when in the storm on Galilee His disciples awakened Him and said: “Master, carest thou not that we perish?”
Jesus arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea: “Peace be still.” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. The disciples said: “What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (Mark 4: 41.)
The disciples might well ask this question for the voice of Him who calmed the raging seas will yet speak “Peace be still” and forever bring to an end the turmoil and strife of men. That day has not yet come and the present seeming period of peace is only a temporary calm in the storm engendered by human passions which precipitated the world conflict of 1914 and was responsible for World War II. Men of good will are endeavoring today to end strife and bloodshed but the clouds of war are gathering on the horizon as nations continue to refuse to walk in the paths of justice, righteousness and peace. But peace on earth will come when He who calmed the storm on Galilee returns as “Prince of Peace,” for the earth will yet be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. Then the era of storm and tempest and uncontrolled human passions will have passed away under the administration and rule of Him who is “Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” – for of His Kingdom there shall be no end.
