A Nation of Apathy
“And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.” (Matthew 24:12)
Webster’s dictionary defines iniquity as: injustice, crime, sin. Is this not what is happening in our Israel nations today? There is so much injustice. Crime is flourishing and sin is everywhere.
Webster’s dictionary defines apathy as: indifference.
As I see it, in the world today, iniquity abounds and people are full of apathy. We seem to accept crime, sin and injustice as “just the way it is today and there is no use getting upset about it”. How apathetic is that statement! Of course we should be upset at what is going on today! The world is in a horrible mess and yet we say “that is just the way it is!” What has happened to us? We are indeed “lost sheep who have lost their way”.
We no longer have statesmen to stand up and warn us of what is happening, statesmen like the late Winston Churchill. Today, whenever our church leaders, politicians and others speak out against what is going on, they almost always re-track their statements as soon as they receive criticism. A good example is Jerry Falwell. We may not always agree with him but sometimes he says things that must be said. Yet, it seems that as soon as the first burst of criticism arrives, so does his apology. Another case of political correctness? Sadly, we have no statesmen today, men and women who have the courage of their convictions. Statesmen do not retreat from what is right.
Where is our responsibility to God? He has given us so much to be thankful for yet we are brushing him aside. As I see it we seem to stand up for anything but our Christian values and beliefs! In Deuteronomy 28, the first 14 verses are the blessings the Israel nations will receive following their obedience. However, in Deuteronomy 28:15 it states: “But it shall come to pass if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee.” The rest of this chapter is a list of the curses and punishments we shall receive following disobedience. We have all of them today! We are cursed because of our disobedience. Our iniquity followed by our apathy has brought us exactly where we are today and I suppose, where we deserve to be.
Still, just because we are iniquitous, we must remember that God has not forgotten his people, Israel. God made a promise to Abraham and his descendents and God does not forget his promises. Jeremiah 30:11 says “For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.”
We are living in very dangerous times! Our enemies are doing their best to obliterate the name of Jesus Christ. We are not to be a nation of apathy but a nation of warriors for out Lord Jesus. A nation whose battle cry is “Onward Christian soldiers marching as to war. With the cross of Jesus going on before.”
Let us be Christian soldiers on the march for our Lord Jesus Christ. All that is happening in this world now is leading to his soon return. We must be ready to stand with him as the soldiers he deserves. We must NOT be soldiers of apathy for the anti-Christ forces!
Let us pray we are worthy to be His soldiers. Amen.
