“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.” (Psa. 91:1-2).

I recently listened to a talk on Psalm 91 by Peggy Joyce Ruth. She said some very interesting things that made me look at Psalm 91 more closely. This is a very powerful Psalm and if we choose to hear His Word and believe it and learn to trust in Him He will be our refuge.

For Psalm 91:4, and I have heard this before, she used the example of the hawk flying overhead and below was a mother hen with her chicks a little ways away. The hen spread out her wings and the chicks ran under her wings and then she closed her wings gathering them under her to protect them. She did not run to them gathering them all up, they ran to her. In Matthew 23:37 we also see this picture of God as a mother hen waiting to gather her chicks under her if they would only come, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!” My mother also mentioned the story of the firemen who found a burned hen in a fire and they wondered why the hen had not run out of the building but when they lifted the dead hen her little chicks ran out. They had run to her and she had protected them through the fire giving her own life.

The words in a letter from a very wise woman who lives on Vancouver Island gave me the idea for this article. She said, “This is indeed a wicked-minded world when no one but God through Jesus Christ can cleanse it. There can be no other source on earth except a tremendous act of Divine Power that could make the slightest dent in the thick structure we have built around ourselves.” Recent events have reinforced her statement as we see this world becoming more and more violent and there appears to be no way out.

“For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;” (Col. 1:19)

This is a tough world. So many things are happening in the world that sometimes it is hard to recognize it as the one we grew up in. My father passed away only six years ago but I don’t think he would be able to handle the world as it is today. We are morally bankrupt. A friend of mine is mentoring a young woman who has just recently joined her church and it is amazing what this young woman has told her about what is going on out there today. The world for so many young people is full of darkness and they don’t know any other way. Luckily this young woman turned her back on it all and found Christ. She is now a new person in Jesus Christ.  “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2Cor. 5:17).
