The Great Satan
by Vern Whittaker

“And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, ….. “(Rev. 20:10)

There is a teaching that Islam, the Jews, the United States, and others are the Great Satan. Yet, in truth, no nation or peoples are the great Satan. Indeed, Satan is his own person, his own individual. When Jesus called the synagogue of the Jews the synagogue of Satan, or when he said to Peter, “get behind me Satan,” was he suggesting that Satan takes men captive at will, that he can do so because the spirit of which man is born comes from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? In reality, this is the tree of death, whereas the nature of the Son of God came from the tree of life, which is a different spirit than what man is born in the natural.

Fortunately, if you are born again, then you have that nature that comes from the Tree of Life. Alternately, all men born of women have the fallen nature within themselves. Jesus, being born of a woman, took human nature upon himself and overcame it through the power of the Spirit of the Father and of the God Spirit that rested upon Him. We have to bear in mind that it was God’s own Spirit that empowered Jesus not to be touched by sin, but to be sinless. For the nature of the Father is a sinless nature. Jesus is the son of light, Satan is the son of darkness. Jesus came to destroy the works of Satan whereas Satan seeks to bring all men into subjection unto him and to bring them unto death with him. On the other hand, Jesus seeks to restore us to a place of Grace, that we might have redemption.

It is very important that we try to resist that nature allowed to exist in our members, no matter to what nation we belong. Important to remember as well, Satan doesn’t just hold men captive but he also holds nations in subjection.

Of course, there are those who willingly give up their power to Satan, as history and current events have demonstrated. The son(s) of perdition will emerge from such individuals and like Satan, he or she will have within him or her a great spirit of deception, going forth to deceive the nations. If it is to be one person, I don’t believe it will be long until he is revealed and will appear as a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Quite likely he will make himself to appear as the servant of God, the representative of the Lord Jesus Christ, but in reality being as subtle as the beast, and enjoying his power through Satan.

Happily, by giving us His Son, God showed us a way to escape, to use Grace wisely by hiding ourselves in Christ, that we might be the children of light and not of darkness.
