He was a man of undaunted courage, and broad vision, highly educated and accomplished, experienced to a degree in State-craft, and yet, notwithstanding, he was possessed of that humility of character and understanding, which endeared him to the hearts, not only of his own people, but to a very large number outside the bounds of the British Empire. WINSTON CHURCHILL is a name which means much to the British race, and in their hour of peril during the Second World War. Let us therefore analyze the name of this outstanding man.
WIN-STON(E) CHURCH-(H) ILL
The first syllable of his Christian name “WIN”, is characteristic of the man. Chambers' Dictionary defines the word as, “To get by labour; to gain in contest; to achieve; to gain the victory, etc.,” and when we remember the Prime Minister's words on taking over his office in 1940, viz.: "I can only promise you at this stage, blood, sweat and tears" we must all agree that the first syllable of his Christian name is inseparably interwoven with his indomitable achievements.
Let us now consider the second syllable of his Christian name, STON(E). Surely in this name we have a hidden key, which if correctly solved, contains a very definite promise to our race.
How many of our readers are aware that the British Empire (including our American cousins) is referred to in the Bible as the STONE Kingdom? (See Daniel 2). Just as ancient Babylon was represented by Gold; Medo-Persia by Silver; Greece by Brass, and Imperial Rome by Iron (Daniel 2) -so the World Power which was to follow is symbolized by STONE (Verses 44 and 45).
This then the fifth World Power, or STONE Kingdom, we definitely know to be the present day British Empire, or in its widest sense, Anglo-Saxondom.
Let us therefore continue further to analyze the name CHURCH(HILL). You all know that the Church is a house set apart for Christian Worship. A Temple is likewise consecrated for the same purpose. We have therefore the Spiritual side strongly emphasized here, reminding us of our duty to God at all times, as from creatures to their CREATOR.
And finally, the last syllable (H)ILL. Now a hill is a small mountain, and mountains in Bible symbolism means NATIONS. But Hill also conveys Strength: foundation. "A city that is set on an HILL cannot be hid." (Matt. 2: 14). "I to the hills will lift mine eyes, from whence does come mine aid." (Ps. 121).
Let us therefore summarize in a sentence what we have said:
WIN-STON(E) CHURCH-(H) ILL
The Stone-Kingdom (present day Anglo-Saxondom) will gain the victory through Christian and spiritual service to God, and trusting in Him.
Surely, here is a lesson, and a study which we would do well to consider. Such things do not happen accidentally.
