Anglo-Catholics take exception to the title of Protestant, declaring it to be a negative term and contrary to culture, sound learning, and true spirituality. May I remind them of the Coronation Oath? Will you, to the utmost of your power, maintain the laws of God, the true profession of the Gospel and the Protestant Reformed religion established by the Law? The late Archbishop Benson defined the Church of England as being “Catholic, Apostolic, reformed and Protestant. In the dictionary the word ‘protest’ is defined as “to affirm with solemnity—to assert”. The word is therefore not negative as stated but positive. The word was first used in Church history to “assert” or affirm the supremacy of the Bible in all points of doctrine, and freedom to worship God in the way our conscience directs: freedom of private judgment, in fact. These two principles are perhaps the Chief heritage passed onto us by our forefathers, and we cannot lightly give up the word ‘Protestant’, which implies religious freedom.
