Pagan Ephesus

On his second missionary journey, Paul visited Ephesus, a sea port in Asia Minor, facing towards Greece. It was the capital city of the Roman province in which it was situated and the centre of the worship of the goddess Diana which gave rise to a profitable trade in portable shrines and images which devotees brought to carry on journeys or to set up in their houses. The Roman Church still profits greatly from the pagan "shrine business".
