When
it was dark we gave a pledge—when faith seemed foolish,
hope in vain. When it was dark we made a vow that we’d
go back to fight again… When it was dark we stood
alone, our only shield a strip of sea. When it was dark
we called on God to save us from the enemy.
Now it is light. The Day is come. The morning glow is in
the sky. We have gone forth in all our strength. The hour
has struck and hope runs high… Did we not swear that
we’d return, a new and better world to build? Now
is the promise sealed in blood; the word made good, the
pledge fulfilled.
