Editors Note: We reach back to August
31st, 1955 for this month’s archive. This letter was
submitted by A.A. Adams from California, a Christian well
past his 80th birthday at the time. His letter is still a
source of great inspiration and I think you will enjoy reading
it as much as we did.
Dear
Fellow Members:
I have heard of a story named the sweetest story ever told;
but I think one of the sweetest among the many in the word
of God, is the Twenty-third Psalm. It expresses such beautiful
sentiment.
This Psalm I feel was intended especially for The Children
of Israel, and those who acknowledge our Lord as their Shepherd.
Knowing that the Author David was one of our Lord’s
sheep as we are also, then the Lord Jesus must be our Shepherd.
Now the Twenty-third Psalm.
“The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not want.” As
one of our Lord’s sheep we shall be supplied with every
necessity of Life as food, clothing, warmth, love, spiritual
as well as material food, health and strength, sufficient
to take each successive step.
“He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.”
The green pastures of peace, beauty, nourishment for body
and soul and communion with God.
“He leadeath me beside the still waters.” Pure,
deep, still waters. Water of life, truth and waters of cleansing
in baptism unto the Lord, in other words dedicating our lives
to Him.
“He restoreth my soul.” He breathed into our nostrils
the breath of life and we became a living soul. In Him we
co-ordinate and have our life.
“He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His
name’s sake.” Psalm 85:13 – Righteousness
shall go before Him: and shall set us in the way of His steps.
God is Love.
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow
of death; I will fear no evil, for thou art with me, thy rod
and thy staff they comfort me.” We are all sinners,
and subject to death. Though we are unworthy of life, yet
God hath redeemed us from the curse of sin and death by His
Son Christ Jesus. Thus we may say, “I will fear no evil.”
There is no need for fear for God is with us.
“Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” The outcome
of our chastizment, in the final, becomes our joy for we know
that God chastises them that He loves. His staff is our peace,
our rest, also our rescue from harm.
“Thou preparest a table before me, in the presense of
mine enemies.” Yes, a table of every good and worthwhile
thing, of all necessary things of life.
“Thou anointest my head with oil.” The oil of
the Spirit, oil of healing and strength.
“My cup runneth over.” We are supplied with all
of His good gifts to a running over measure.
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days
of my life.” As a member of the Children of Israel and
a servant of God, surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life.
“And I shall dwell in the House of the Lord for ever.”
In His presence, among His people. In the House of the Lord,
made without hands, His temple, the Mountain of the House
of the Lord.
In closing I will say – this the Twenty-third Psalm
calls our attention to the wonderful things God has done for
those who will heed His call; and so may we all prayerfully
and earnestly praise Him; while seeking His glorious light
that we may hear and understand what to do in these trying
times. He is our Commander-in-Chief, our Lord Jesus Christ.
May we wait upon the Lord.
To enable me to remember I have written this from memory.
