Christ's Power

Jesus said: “All power is given unto Me.”

Those who deny the Divinity of Jesus and the existence of God might well ponder just what power is referred to and how it may be used by Jesus against those who speak against Him if He should choose. We know that at His capture in the Garden of Gethsemane He had the power to save Himself by calling upon twelve legions of angels. We know He had the power to lay down and take up His own life. But St. Matthew in chapter 28, verse 18 said that Jesus told His Disciples that “ALL power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.”

It is hard to visualize the immensity of the power embraced in this statement. This includes the powers of the Universe, such as the radiation of the sun, the earth (and indeed all the radiation of the stars in the heavens), the gravitational pull, and all kinetic energy represented by all the heavenly bodies in motion.

There are reports of panic because of the possibility of earthquakes. Terrible as an earthquake can be, it is relatively child’s play when one considers the great powers of the Universe. Christians take comfort in the thought that they are in the Hands of our beloved Jesus Christ.
